What Is A UV Light Air Purifier?

Benefits of an Air Purifier

Fewer Illnesses

A UV air purifier will kill many of the viruses and bacteria that spread the flu, colds and other illnesses. They can keep sicknesses from spreading through the air to multiple family members and help you avoid sick days away from work or school. UV air cleaners can also help people with existing illnesses prevent severe infections.

Higher Energy Savings

You can’t use a UV air purifier to catch dead organisms, dirt, pollen, pet dander or other small particles. But it uses less energy than an air cleaner with a filter. UV lights only operate when your heater or air conditioner fan is on, while conventional air purifiers have small fans that stay on constantly. A UV lamp can also keep biological growth from clogging your HVAC system’s air filter and making it less efficient.

Easy Maintenance

UV air purifiers can help you avoid extra dust on your furniture and floors. It can also help you keep your HVAC system ductwork clean.

They can also reduce the risk of damage to walls, ceilings, and other parts of your home stemming from biological growth or a pest infestation. UV lamps don’t have filters that need changing like many other air purifiers. However, you’ll need to replace the UV bulb once a year.

What are UV light air purifiers?

UV air purifiers are designed to use short-wave ultraviolet light (UV-C light) to inactivate airborne pathogens and microorganisms like mold, bacteria and viruses. They have the same ultimate goal of all air purifiers: to reduce indoor air pollutants. The technology is also referred to as UV germicidal irradiation, or UVGI air purifiers. This is different from other air purifier technologies that contain UV light technology but do not use it directly against air pollutants.

On the market, UV-C air purifiers are currently sold as stand-alone, freestanding devices or as systems installed into pre-existing residential or commercial HVAC units. As air is forced through the device, it passes UV lamps, which directly attempt to disinfect the air by means of germicidal irradiation.
